GoNetSim was born out of a desire to modernise the malware analysis lab. We found that too many malware analysis tools are outdated, difficult to use, unmaintained, or a mix of the above. That’s not to say they aren’t incredible tools, rather they’ve established their legacy and it’s time for their successors to carry it forward.

Our goal with GoNetSim was to establish a modern network simulation tool ready for modern malware analysis. The few existing tools have limited support for modern protocols and use clunky, highly dependent code which make it easy to break installations.

We hope to see (and maybe build ourselves) an ecosystem of tools that modernise & simplify legacy malware analysis programs, and GoNetSim is our contribution to that ecosystem.

We see this project as something valuable for other cybersecurity researchers, and instead of monetising it, we want to keep it open source and free for everyone to use. It’s intentionally been distributed under the Apache 2.0 license to give maximum freedom for anyone to use, modify, and distribute, both as a thank you to the open source security community and as a way to encourage contributions from the public.
